Agreeing with mebkick here, no story is 100% original. I’m pretty sure cameron loosely based this movie on the novel Call me Joe, along with other sources but his form of combining all these elements is what makes it original in its own sense.

oh, obviously jake’s character is the one that figures out the way to beat the humans.
his avatar dies obviously in the fight, but the n’avi get the win.
jake isn’t court marshalled at the end, and it’s left uncertain what punishment he’ll get. it’s suggested he’ll avoid prison but is about to be discharged dishonorably.

no oxygen, the humans can’t survive, they retreat, and the natives win for the time being. DOOR LEFT WIDE OPEN FOR A SEQUEL, which cameron wants…..

The man said they are hard to kill and maybe the bullets don’t kill them that fast plus too they don’t look that small, and if you have the time you wait for the battery’s to die on that mech suit.

The story seems a bit similar to Dune…
They both are on a hostile planet to find an ultra valuable resource. They both fight primitive natives. And in both the main character becomes one with the natives…
